All people are prone to having weird thoughts. We all have our fears, and sometimes all there is to spiral down the rabbit’s hole is a small seed of doubt, uncertainty or a rich imagination. Anxiety is a mental illness founded on one of the fundamental human emotions: fear.

Anxiety can be debilitating and can induce all kinds of physical symptoms. I suffered from irritable bowel syndrome for years because of fear of potentially something bad happening with my family. I was always worried about them, and that’s because I wasn’t sure I would be able to cope with losing any of my important family members. Instead of enjoying the time I had left with my grandmother, who was like a mother to me, I worried about her ageing and dying one day.

It wasn’t everything in my head, though. As a child, I lived in a toxic environment with a family where you didn’t know what you were getting for dinner: a fight or food. My mother was mentally unstable and snappy, like her brothers and the entire family. I heard a lot of shouting during my childhood, so whenever it was peace and quiet, I was expecting that it won’t last, and that was just the quiet before the storm.
