I love this piece. The whole story speaks to me but this part, particularly, holds its the entire essence. I strongly believe that we need to separate our identities in the mother-daughter relationship. An enmeshed relationship can produce more harm than good, therefore, as we mature, the mother’s role should be focused on encouraging the daughter to develop individuality. Healthy boundaries are key. They don’t make anyone selfish but instead, as the saying goes “empathy without boundaries is self destruction”, so we need to care for our own selves, in the end.

Excellent story, Beth! I am glad I discovered you ♡ You just inspired me to share my own “building healthy boundaries” story with my Mom.

Love,

/ET
